regarded by many as one of the world finest directors, and renowned for his most 'japanese' of styles, yasujiro ozu made his first film in 1927 and went on to direct 55 films until his death in 1963. it was after his death that the interest in the films of his contemporaries bunuel, bergman and fellow countryman kurosawa resulted in a small tour of his films in the us and screenings at international film festivals ensuring that his films and style are now recognised world wide. this beautiful boxset contains two of his better known films record of a tenement gentlemen and flavour of green tea over rice.
the earliest film in this box-set is record of a tenement gentlemen (1947), set in post war japan it is an irresistibly comedic tale of a young boy abandoned to poverty by his father and his growing relationship with tane, a local widower. initially tane to tries to force him out of his charge also citing poverty, but the boy ingrains himself with tane so they strike a deal that ensures both of their happiness. the second film in the box-set is flavour of green tea over rice (1952) and is one of ozu's lighter films about a married couple who are a little bored with their existence in an arranged marriage and set about livening it up in this delicately observed tale of rekindled love. following the recent one hundredth anniversary of his birth tartan video is proud to present this box-set, the second in the collection of newly mastered volumes of his films.
