harry and eve graham (edmund o'brian and joan fontaine) are trying to adopt a baby. the head of the agency senses harry is keeping a secret and does some investigating. he soon discovers harry, a travelling salesman, has a second wife and a baby. via flashbacks, harry tells the adoption agents how he ended up in two marriages
hell's house
naive teenager, jimmy mason (junior durkin) is given a job by his idol - the bootlegger matt kelly, (pat o'brien) but doesn't notice he's really interested in his girl, peggy (bette davis). when cops raid the hide-out jimmy finally wises up and escapes to confront matt and peggy.

a bus crossing nevada's alkali flats in the dead of winter gets caught in a blizzard. among the passengers is billie, (carole lombard), a girl crook being taken back to prison in handcuffs by detective dan egan (owen moore). they find themselves stranded in a small village and at the mercy of a lineman called bill dougherty (william boyd). despite warnings from detective, billie falls in love with bill, who turns out to be an escaped convict.
